As we inch closer and closer to Christmas, I find myself thinking about what Christmas really means. It’s got to be about much more than drinks and presents and lots to eat and drink.
Thankfully Diche Enunwa who is the second half of the amazing duo of writers ink
Remember them? Tope and Diche?
Award winning writers of movies and series like WHEN LOVE HAPPENS, IN LINE , LUNCHTIME HEROES, JUNE, JENIFA’s DIARY amongst others.
Well when she’s not busy being an award winning script writer, she spend her time doing bible studies and she’s known for her #lessonsILearnt series. So I asked her to do me a Lessons I Learnt about Christmas.
Yep! I can bully her because in case you haven’t guessed she’s my sister and the baby of the family at that
So, this is the result of my bullying. Enjoy…
Christmas is almost here again yayyyyyy!!!! Oh I don’t know about you but to me Christmas has always been “the most wonderful time of the year!” Yeah I actually sang that last part out loud, hehehehe #ifyouknowyouknow. Think family, gifts, lots of food, decorations, holiday from work and less traffic! Oh such bliss!
But that’s not all the season is about; it’s actually more about the Christmas story… the story of our Lord Jesus Christ who was born into the world to save every one of us from the wages of sin.
And so today because it is Christmas season and it’s all about giving, I would like to give you this special gift of 5 lessons I learnt from the Christmas story. So here goes….
As I’m sure you already know, a young virgin girl named Mary somewhere in a little village in Galilee was visited by an Angel and he gave her the following message…
30. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:30-33 (NIV)
This was an amazing visitation if you ask me… First she had just been assured that she was favoured of the Most High God and then she had been guaranteed the blessing of a special child that was going to “blow” beyond comprehension and make both her and his earthly father super proud and famous forever.
Now if you know anything about God, you’ll know that once He says a thing it comes to pass and this promise definitely did, but not before she endured the emotional turmoil of possibly being rejected by her fiancée, being faced with potential public ridicule, the labour on a donkey, facing rejection at the door of every single guest house and finally giving birth in a donkey and cow poop infested Manger. Ah! Ejo o! If he didn’t favour her nko? Lol!
So maybe you’re in this phase of your journey with God, where it seems like the year is about to end and instead of balling in all the promises God gave you, you can literally smell the donkey poop beside you. Do not worry my dear, God’s word will surely come to pass, wait for it. It shall not tarry.
When the angel appeared and told Mary she was going to have a child, she was confused and scared as she should be and she asked the angel how this would be. The angel went on to say great things like how the power of God will overshadow her and how the baby will be born Holy and bla bla bla bla… But I’m sure Mary was still giving him the “What is this one saying, biko?” look so the angel did what he knew would give her the strength to forge forward, he gave her the testimony of another…
36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. Luke 1:36 (NIV)
I’m sure immediately Mary heard this she must have thought “bros and you didn’t lead with that?” because the next words out of her mouth were…
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.Luke 1:38 (NIV)
And she headed down there to see for herself and be strengthened.
So this Christmas make it part of the family gathering agenda to share your testimonies of the year, one with another. You never know whose spirit you will strengthen or who will strengthen yours.
41. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Luke 1:41 (NIV)
In a world where the devil is determined to fill us with filth and negative vibes it is important to surround ourselves with “sounds” that make the “babies” inside us leap. For those who aren’t physically pregnant you are probably asking me “what baby?”
Well newsflash, God’s children are never without fruit. We are always pregnant with something… ideas, dreams, visions, promises etc. What you hear can either make the baby leap or just out rightly even kill the baby
so shut off any noise that isn’t allowing these things leap remember…
17. So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. Romans 10:17 (NLT)
Speaking about hearing Good news, no one ever has a genuine encounter with Jesus and/or His good news and is able to stay silent.
17. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished. Luke 2:17 (NLT)
Sometimes we get so encumbered by jingle bells and jollof rice that we forget to share with others the real reason for the season. These shepherds had an encounter that left them in awe of God’s awesomeness and they couldn’t wait to share it with EVERYONE. Of course, no one who heard what they had to say remained the same.
So this Christmas don’t just share rice, share the good news which is this…
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 (NLT)
… Someone is literally dying to hear it
25-32. In Jerusalem at the time, there was a man, Simeon by name, a good man, a man who lived in the prayerful expectancy of help for Israel. And the Holy Spirit was on him. The Holy Spirit had shown him that he would see the Messiah of God before he died. Led by the Spirit, he entered the Temple. As the parents of the child Jesus brought him in to carry out the rituals of the Law, Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God…. Luke 2:25-32
Oh I was so blessed reading this verse! This was a man who had been in prayerful expectancy all his life for one thing, just one thing… help for Israel! Now this probably looked like a herculean task because those isrealites ehn… I don’t have enough time to talk about how they had epically misbehaved time after time plus the original sin was just holding everybody down and refusing for them to be great but this…
18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. Proverbs 23:18 (KJV)
… Oh yes! Our God never says anything unless it is true. That which Simeon prayed for and expected he eventually held in his hands. Halleluyah!
I don’t know what it is that God has promised you but as long as you have prayed it through and continue to expect it, you too shall one day hold it in your hands.
In the meantime bear the sacrifice with joy, be strengthened by the testimonies of others, surround yourself with sounds that keep the baby leaping and remember to share the good news with others.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
