What is it?â he queried as he put on the air conditioner
âNothing,â she replied fiddling with her car key
âLiar!â he said softly, turning to her. âI know you,â he stated, holding her gaze as he took her hands in his, putting a stop to her fiddling.
She averted hers. âI shouldnât be here,â she said, trying to free her hands from his but he wouldnât let go. He was silent a while and she was forced to look at him. His eyes were glued to her left hand. âFolaâŚâ she murmured.
âI still canât believe you are married. No! Let me rephrase that. I canât believe you are married to some guy you met about a year ago and dumped me!â
She wasnât fooled by the evenness of his tone. She knew him well enough to know he was angry. âI didnât dump you,â she said in defence of herself.
âYou did! Over the phone!â
âIâm sorry I had to do it over the phone but you were miles away from here, you didnât expect me to hop on a flight and come over just to have that conversation,â she replied tartly, finally disengaging herself from him.
They both fell silent, upset until Fola asked, âDo you love him?
âCome on Fola, you know me better than that. I wouldnât marry a man I donât love.â
âDo you love him more than you love me?â he asked, closing the distance between them
âThatâs not fair?â
âJust answer!â he insisted.
Maria opened her mouth to speak but words failed her. If the truth be told, it was a question sheâd never really asked herself because she didnât want to know. Poju was sweet and wonderful and he loved her dearly. The only issue was his work. It was always infringing on their time together and she felt as if she were in competition. The only reason her husband wasnât around on Christmas Eve and wonât be until the following year was because he had an assignment that needed to be taken care of out of the country. She wouldnât even get to spend New Year with him and the situation frustrated her endlessly. She didnât have an issue with him excelling at his work, she loved her job too and excelled at it but it was not at the risk of them being together.
The case with Fola however was different. When she was with him, she never felt she was in competition with anything. He loved her and it was with reckless abandon. He had the same dedication and passion for excellence that Poju had but he never made her feel left out; never made their relationship suffer. The only reason she was not Folaâs wife was because he was not ready to get married when she was and the pressure from her family had been unbearable especially since Poju was breathing down her neck and Fola was out of the country. Sheâd dated Fola for five years and that counted for something but Poju was her husband and that also counted for something. She gave a deep sigh as she looked at Folaâs expectant face.
âI donât know,â she answered.
âThen why are you here? You could have given me an excuse, walked away a number of times, I gave you that option but you didnât.â
She chuckled in self-mockery as she replied. âI wanted to, tried to butâŚâ
âBut what?â
She swallowed, not sure what the âbutâ was as he put his hand behind her neck and pulled her close. She closed her eyes, her body tingling at his touch yet her head telling her she was about to make a big mistake.
âYour body is hot,â he murmured softly in her ears.
And she knew the implication. If she didnât get out now, she wouldnât be able to anymore; especially if he kissed her as he was about to. Her body wanted him but sheâd made an oath to another man and her conscience would plague her for the rest of her life. She turned her face away as his lips came down, and pushed him away, upsetting his balance. Without waiting to see the damage sheâd done, she ran out of the room.
An hour later, she drove into her compound, her hands still shaking as she parked the car and got out. She had come close to adultery and she wasnât even married for two years. Now that her body wasnât controlling her head, she knew sheâd made the right decision. Some fun she would have gotten all because she didnât want to be alone. She sighed, breathing in the fresh evening air as she walked into the house, glad she had fled. The fact that she still had feelings for Fola didnât change the truth that she was married and Poju didnât deserve a cheating wife irrespective of his shortcomings. She was quite startled when she heard her husbandâs voice.
âHey!â
âWhat are you doing here?â
âWell,â he began, walking up to her, his face creased in a smile, âI was wondering what I could give you as a Christmas gift and I realised the greatest Christmas gift I could give you is⌠me⌠here⌠with you,â he stated rubbing his hands gently over her shoulder as he smiled into her face. âSo I packed my stuff and decided I would surprise you.â
Maria burst out in tears, puzzling her husband who gave her a worried quizzical look. âBaby, what is it? Why are you crying? Are you alright? Is everythingâŚ.â
âIâm fine! Iâm fine!â she stated, smiling through her tears. âIâm justâŚ. Happy!â
Pojuâs smile broadened as he pulled his wife close, kissing her forehead. âIâm happy you are happy. Merry Christmas wife!â
âMerry Christmas too,â Maria responded glad to be nestled in the warmth of her husbandâs embrace and no one else. Christmas was going to be fun after all.

Okay ladies, I believe we are all planning towards Christmas and have loads of fun lined up but the moral of this story is that we shouldnât get carried away with having âfun,â that we donât do whatâs right. Let everything we do be with the fear of the Lord and with moderation.
Merry Christmas ladies! I am sooooooo excited, especially with the bottompotblessings God has in store for us.
Shalom
